11 die of heatstroke at Maharashtra awards ceremony: 24 under treatment, many sick due to scorching sun

11 people died due to heatstroke at the Maharashtra Bhushan event in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra on Sunday. 24 people are under treatment in hospital. Among the dead are 8 women, most of them elderly. The program was held from 11.30 am to 1 am in a large ground in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature of the day was 38 degrees.

In this program, Home Minister Amit Shah gave an award to social activist Dattatreya Narayan. Lakhs of his fans attended the event. A complete audio and video system was installed in the ground so that all people could watch and listen to the programme, but no shade was placed over the seating arrangement. In the incident, the sun and heat affected the health of many people.

Lakhs of people participated in this program. The program was supposed to end at 10.30 am but went on till 1 pm. After which it took time to evacuate the people in the crowd. Dehydration causes many people to feel dizzy and their health deteriorates.
