There has been a lot of uproar over the alleged leaking of videos of bathing girls in the hostel of the private Chandigarh University in Mohali. After the incident came to light, students of the university staged massive protests throughout the night of Saturday-Sunday, and the protests were intensified by rumors that eight female students had attempted suicide. After preliminary investigation, the police have arrested three people, including the student and her boyfriend, who made the alleged video in this incident. However, the police have ruled out the possibility that videos of 50-60 students were made and that some students attempted suicide.

Controversy is escalating over the leaking of videos of female students in a private university in Mohali, Punjab. After this incident came to light, hundreds of students of the university took to the road and staged a protest. Seeing the increasing protests on this issue, the university management has announced the suspension of studies for Monday and Tuesday. Punjab Additional Director General of Police Gurpreet Dev, who reached the campus of Chandigarh University, said that a student studying MBA in the hostel was making a video of herself in the bathroom and sending it to a young man. At this time, three-four girls misunderstood that the girl was making videos of other girls from under the bathroom door. However, no objectionable photos or videos of any other student were found from the student’s mobile phone.

Chandigarh University Pro-Chancellor R.S. Bawa also termed the claim that videos of some female students were made in his hostel and leaked on social media as fake and baseless. Moreover, the university authorities have also dismissed reports that some female students tried to commit suicide after the incident. He said that a student had an anxiety attack and was taken to the hospital. His condition is good. However, a large number of students demonstrated on the university campus on Sunday evening and accused the university authorities of suppressing the incident. Most of the students demonstrated wearing black clothes and chanted ‘We want justice’. The students continued their protests till late on Sunday night.


Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohali, Vivek Sheel Soni, said that a student was arrested and her mobile phone has been sent for forensic analysis after the students rioted in the university on Saturday night. A case has been registered against the student under Section 354-C of IPC and IT Act. Police said the student had sent her video to a young man in Shimla. That youth has also been arrested. Police also arrested another person from Shimla itself. Further investigation is underway in this case.

As the controversy of this incident increased, Chief Minister Bhagwant Ma said on Sunday that the incident that happened in Chandigarh University is unfortunate. Our daughters are honorable. We have ordered a high-level probe into the incident. Strict action will be taken against the culprits. Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal has also come forward in support of the students. The National Commission for Women has also taken note of this incident. Opposition parties in Punjab have also criticized the incident.
