Taking a major decision on Tuesday, the Supreme Court has ordered the closure of cases related to the Babri Masjid demolition and the 2002 Gujarat Riots. The court said that several petitions filed regarding the Gujarat riots now have no meaning. Hence the action against them is being stopped. The court said that the trial has been completed in 8 out of 9 Gujarat riots cases. Apart from this, the court has also ordered to close the contempt case related to Babri Masjid demolition. The Supreme Court said that in view of the Supreme Court’s 2019 decision on Ayodhya, the contempt case cannot be taken forward.
In fact, the Supreme Court has ordered the closure of contempt proceedings against advocate Prashant Bhushan and journalist Tarun Tejpal in the Babri Masjid demolition case. Both have apologized in this matter. In fact, in an interview in 2009, Prashant Bhushan accused former and current judges of corruption. Arguing in this matter, Kapil Sibal said that Prashant Bhushan and Tarun Tejpal have apologized. So the case against both can be closed. His demand was accepted by a bench of Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice Suryakant and Justice MM Sundaresh.
In November 2009, notices were issued to Prashant Bhushan and Tarun Tejpal. Explaining this, Prashant Bhushan said, ‘In the interview I gave to Tehelka in 2009, the word corruption was not used for anything special. I have said this in a broad context. It has nothing to do with financial corruption. If any of the judges or their families were hurt by this, I apologize for that. Prashant Bhushan apologized for his statement in August 2020.
