Garba of Gujarat: India’s Next Element

In December last year, the Inter-Governmental Committee of UNESCO’s 2003 Conference on Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Kolkata included Durga Puja in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “The latest nominations will be considered for next year’s cycle,” Curtis said. The nomination files will be scrutinized by the evaluation body in mid-2023 and the names for the 2023 session of the committee will be decided by the end of next year. One of the slides in Curtis’s presentation featured a picture of garba performers and was titled ‘Gujarat Ka Garba: India’s Next Element’. It mentioned that “the file is currently undergoing the technical process of the Secretariat.”
