It is said in the scriptures to read and listen to Devi Bhagavata and Shiva Purana in the holy month of Shravan. Shravani Monday is very important along with every day of this month. Devotees of Shiva fast the month of Shravani or simply fast on Shravaniya Monday. One gets blessings by worshiping Lord Shiva.
The ocean churned between the gods and demons in the month of Shravan itself. Due to which Mahadev was called Nilakantha. By poisoning Lord Shiva became Nilakantha. Mahadev poisons the creation to save it from the effects of poison. And by wearing Nilakantha around one’s neck one becomes Nilakantha. Along with the importance of these mythological stories, devotees perform water ablutions on Mahadev in the month of Shravan to reduce the effect of his poison. It is also said in the scriptures that Monday is very dear to Mahadevji. So all people fast on this day, worship him and express their wishes.
This month of Shravan is also important because many important festivals like Rakshabandhan, Nagapanchami, Pancham Chhath, Satam-Athma, Janmashtami, Parananom occur in this month. Not only this, but fairs are also organized in many places in this month.
In this month of Shravan 4 Somvaps and one Shivratri all come together thus making it a more fruitful month. According to the scriptures, raw rice is to be taken on the first Monday, sesame on the second, whole mug on the third and barley on the fourth Monday. Special women perform special puja in this month for the long life of their husband.
