Former President of the country and known as Missile Man Dr. a. P. Abdul Kalam is honored with India’s highest honor ‘Bharat Ratna’. The country will always be indebted to him. Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. His father Jainulabdin was a boat owner and imam of the local mosque. His mother Ashiamma was a housewife. His father used to take Hindu pilgrims to Rameswaram in his boat.

Since childhood, Dr. Abdul Kalam dreamed of becoming something. However, their conditions were not so good at that time. After leaving school, he used to sit at his elder brother Mustafa Kalam’s shop which was at Rameswaram railway station.

When his brother Shamsuddin needed someone who could help him deliver the newspaper to people’s homes, Kalam took on this responsibility. When he told his father about going out of Rameswaram to study, he said that our love is not a bond for you and our needs will not stop you. Your body can stay in this place but not your mind.

Kalam then took admission in St. Joseph’s College, Trichy in 1950 for intermediate studies. He then graduated in Physics. He then took admission in Madras Institute of Engineering.

Dr. Based on Kalam’s faith and hard work, he got admission. started studying but as time passed in college, his interest in airplanes grew. When he studied engineering, there were two paths before him. First to become a pilot in the Air Force and second to become a scientist in the Ministry of Defence. Kalam prioritized his dreams and left South India for North India to interview to become a pilot in the Air Force.

In the interview, Dr. Abdul Kalam answered every question but the result of the interview revealed that life would give an even tougher test. Eight people were selected in which Dr. Kalam was the ninth. Then he came to Delhi and started working as a scientist where his monthly salary was only fifty rupees. Three years later the center of the Aeronautical Development Establishment was established in Bangalore and he was sent to this centre.




He was then tasked with building an indigenous hovercraft which was considered too difficult. But Dr Kalam was successful in that too and his associates also made the first flight in a hovercraft. Defense Minister Krishnaman also praised him and asked him to develop an even more powerful aircraft, but after Krishnamanan’s removal from the Defense Ministry, Kalam was unable to perform again.

Then Dr. Abdul Kalam gave an interview to the Indian Committee for Space Research. Here he was interviewed by Vikram Sarabhai and he was also selected and was selected as a rocket engineer. They were sent to NASA. After returning from NASA, he was given the responsibility of sending rockets into the sky by India. He also fulfilled this responsibility. After the rocket was ready, its flight time was fixed but shortly before the flight, the hydraulic system started leaking. Again failure was observed. But Dr. Kalam did not give up. As there was no time to fix the leakage, Kalam and his colleagues set the rocket aloft on their shoulders in such a way that the leakage was stopped. Then India launched the first satellite Nike Apache. The Rohini rocket took off and India’s identity spread across the world on the strength of the indigenous rocket.

Dr. Kalam visited Kerala for the first time after becoming the President in 2002. At that time two people were invited to the Kerala Raj Bhavan as the guests of the President. The first was a boot-shoe repairer and the second was the owner of a dhaba… Both of them met while living in Thiruvananthapuram..

Dr. Kalam never saved anything for his family. When he was in the office of the President, he left his savings and salary in the name of a trust.. He said that I have become the President of the country, so as long as I am alive, the government will take care of me, so what is the need for me to keep my salary and savings. ..

Dr. When Kalam was the Director of DRDO, one day a junior scientist came to Dr Kalam and said that I have promised my children that he will take them to see the exhibition so that they can be released early. Kalam sir happily agreed. But the junior scientist was so lost in the work that he forgot to go home early. When he reached home at night, he was shocked to know that Dr. Kalam reached his home on time and also took the children to watch the performance.

In the year 2013 he was invited as the chief guest at the convocation ceremony at IIT Varanasi where a special chair was arranged for him. Which was much bigger than the usual chairs there. But Dr. Kalam refused to sit in that chair and sat only when the organizers called for a normal chair like the rest.

When he became the Director of DRDO in 1982, there was talk of increasing the security of DRDO. A proposal was also made to install glass pieces on its four walls, but Kalam did not approve this proposal. He said that by installing pieces of glass on the four walls, the birds will not be able to sit and the chances of getting injured will also increase. These sensitive thoughts of his did not put pieces of raw material on the wall of DRDO.

In the year 2002, Dr. It was decided that Kalam would become the President. Meanwhile a school invited him to address the students. Without taking any security, Dr. Kalam joined that program. He was going to give a speech in front of 400 students when the electricity failed, until the organizer made some other arrangement, Dr. Kalam reached among the students and Mike Vagae started sharing his stories and also answered the questions of the students.




Dr. Kalam was very appreciative of others’ hard work and skills and would send his own handmade thank you cards. Dr. An artist named Naman Narayan made a sketch of Kalam when he was President and sent it to him. Then Dr. Kalam sent a personalized thank you card and message. Even the sketcher was surprised that the President of the country would appreciate him in this friendly estimation.

During his visit, Dr. Abdul Kalam often used to narrate an incident from his childhood. Dr. Kalam says that when he was eight or nine years old, one evening his father was having dinner after coming home from work.. There was a burnt roti in the plate. At night, Kalam heard his mother apologizing to his father for the burnt roti. Then father very lovingly replied that I like burnt roti too. When Kalam asked his father about this, he said – Burnt breads never hurt anyone but bitter words definitely hurt.. So accept each other’s mistakes in a relationship with love… and have compassion for those who dislike you.
