Chandra Shekhar Azad Birth Anniversary: This is why 'Azad' was the most distinguished among revolutionaries

Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution to freedom of India with the strength of truth, non-violence and simplicity can never be forgotten. Along with this, the contribution of revolutionaries in liberating the country is incredible. In which the name of Chandra Shekhar Azad will never be forgotten. Today is the 115th birth anniversary of Chandrasekhar Azad. Born in Bhabra village of Alirajpur on 23rd July in 1906, Azad was imbued with self-respect and love of country from childhood. He took an oath not to be captured by the British. So at the age of 25, he shot himself and sacrificed himself for the country. However, his patriotism shook the foundations of British rule.
Azad was sent to Kashi to become a Sanskrit scholar
Azad’s birthplace is now Zabuja district of Madhya Pradesh. His father’s name was Sitaram Tiwari and mother’s name was Jagrani Tiwari. It was his mother’s wish that Chandrasekhar should become a scholar of Sanskrit. So he was sent to Kashi Vidyapith Banaras for learning Sanskrit.
Became ‘Azad’
Chandrasekhar participated in Gandhiji’s non-cooperation movement at the age of 15. Azad was arrested for participating in the movement and produced in court on 20 December 1921. Where he said his name is Azad and his father’s name is Azadhan and described jail as home. Azad was the only revolutionary to name himself in this way.
Meeting with Bismil
In 1922, many youth including Azad were disappointed when Gandhi stopped the non-cooperation movement. Many revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Ramprasad Bismil were rising in this decade. Meanwhile, Azad met with Manmathanath Gupta. who had to meet him with Bismil. It was Bismil who founded the Hindustan Republic Assoc.
The revolutionaries named it Quicksilver
Bhagat Singh used to honor Azad with Bismil. Azad began skillfully raising funds for the association. In which they mostly looted government goods. Revolutionary comrades named the quick-brained Azad Quicksilver.
Kakori robbery
Azad was also involved in the Kakori robbery in 1925. But they were not caught. All the revolutionaries except Azad were spending the night in their fixed place after looting the treasure from Kakori. But Azad spent the night in the park. He spent the whole night sitting on the balcony. After the robbery, all the accused were caught, but Azad could not be caught alive.
Saved Bhagat Singh
Azad decided to back up the killing of JP Sanders, who was responsible for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. He fulfilled this responsibility well by saving Bhagat Singh from being arrested. Bhagat Singh was running away after shooting JP Saunders when the constable was about to capture him, but he was hit by Azad’s bullet and Bhagat Singh survived. Thus, Azad’s aim was good, but he allowed Bhagat Singh and Rajguru to shoot and supervised the incident himself.
Azad was an expert in disguise. Whenever an accomplice was captured, they changed their location. There was a prolonged standoff with the British police at Alfred Park in Allahabad. But in the end he shot himself. Whether he shot himself or not has never been confirmed.
