Neeraj Chopra made a new national record, broke his own record set in Tokyo Olympics

Neeraj Chopra threw the javelin 89.30 meters and broke his own record set in the Tokyo Olympics. However, Finland’s Helander won the gold medal in javelin throw with a distance of 89.93m.

Neeraj Chopra, who won the gold medal for India by throwing javelin in Tokyo Olympics, has done a new feat. Neeraj broke his own national record on Tuesday at the Pavo Nurmi Games in Finland. Chopra displayed his best throw of 89.30m here during the game. With this, he improved his own national record and won the silver medal. Earlier, Neeraj had set a national record with a throw of 87.58m during the Tokyo Olympics. It was on the strength of this throw that he won the historic gold medal in Tokyo.

This is javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s first tournament after playing in the Tokyo Olympics and his first to field. During this, Neeraj had to face the legendary Javelin Throwers. This includes former champion Johannes Vetter and world champion Anderson Peters. Peters had recently improved his personal best and threw 93.07m javelin in the Diamond League. The Nurmi Games have been one of Finland’s biggest track and field events since 1957. It is also part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Meet.

Neeraj got second place

This was Neeraj’s first tournament after 10 months and he threw 89.30 in the second attempt which has now become his personal best throw. He threw 86.92 meters in the first attempt. Neeraj’s third, fourth and fifth attempts were invalid. Neeraj finished with a throw of 85.85m in his last attempt. Neeraj may have broken his own national record but finished second behind Olivier Hellander of Finland, who had to be content with a silver medal. Helander took the top spot with 89.93m. Neeraj Chopra had earlier set a national record of 88.07m in Patiala in March last year. He won the Tokyo Olympic gold medal on August 7, 2021 with a throw of 87.58m.
