Significance of Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima is the holiest event in honor of the enlightened Gautama Buddha, who was freed from the cycle of rebirth. He is considered an extraordinary philosopher, spiritual guide and meditator. He successfully attained enlightenment after meditating for 49 days under a banyan tree in Bodh Gaya. For 45 years Gautama Buddha preached the ultimate path of non-violence, peace, kindness, dharma and nirvana. He was born into a royal family, but left his home at the age of 30, renouncing the luxurious life. Later he lived a life of penance and sought the truth that would free him from worldly miseries.

According to beliefs, Lord Buddha was born in 563 BC at a place called Lumbini in Nepal. At the age of 29, shunned from all responsibilities of material life and family, he set out in search of truth. After which he attained enlightenment by performing rigorous penance under the Bodhi tree for 49 days. That is why he is called Bodhisattva. He enlightened the world with his knowledge. In 483 BC Lord Buddha merged into the Panchatattva on the day of Vaishakh Purnima. This day is called Parinirvana Day. Hence his birth anniversary day is also known as Buddha Purnima or Vaishakhi Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti. Let us tell you that countries like Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, Java, Indonesia, Tibet and Mongolia celebrate the special day of Buddha Jayanti as ‘Vesak’ through cultural festivals.
