He informed that the Central Government has decided to erect fencing on the India-Myanmar border and end the Free Movement Arrangement (FMR). He informed that the Central Government has decided to erect fencing on the India-Myanmar border and end the Free Movement Arrangement (FMR).
Taking precautions for the security of the country: Foreign Minister
Speaking to journalists, the External Affairs Minister said that for the security of our country, the security of our states including Mizoram, we need to take some precautions. However, the precautions we are taking at the moment are in response to a certain situation. He further said that our neighbor is currently going through a serious crisis.
The military coup took place in 2021
It is known that there was a military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, since then till now this country is facing a serious crisis. Thousands of people from Myanmar have taken refuge in various north-eastern states, especially Mizoram, since the coup.
Need to be cautious: Jaishankar
During this, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said that the Central Government is very sensitive towards the interests, traditions, customs and cross-border relations of the people. Regarding fencing the India-Myanmar border and ending the free movement system, he said that at the moment it is important that we exercise caution. We want people to understand that this is a response to today’s situation.
This permission is given under FMR
It is known that the free movement system allows people living near the India-Myanmar border to travel up to 16 km into each other’s territory without a visa. India shares a 1,643 km long border with Myanmar and notably Mizoram, a 510 km long border with the neighboring country.
