Tourist boat sinks in Kerala, 21 dead so far, PM Modi expresses grief, announces 2-2 lakh compensation

A houseboat sank in Kerala’s Malappuram district. So far 21 people have died in this accident. The total number of people in the boat could not be estimated.

At least 21 people drowned after a boat carrying more than 25 people capsized in Kerala’s Malappuram district. The incident took place on Sunday (May 7) around 7 pm at the Tuval Teram tourist spot in Tannur. Regional Fire Range Officer Shiju KK said that 21 bodies have been recovered so far. The exact number of people sitting in the boat is not yet known. A search operation is in progress to trace the number.

As soon as the incident was reported, several vehicles reached the spot and started rescue operations. Meanwhile, Kerala Health Minister Veena George called an emergency meeting of the state’s health department at midnight following the incident and directed officials to ensure better treatment of the injured. The Health Minister has directed to speed up the post-mortem process and provide better treatment to the injured. The minister has also given strict instructions to start the post-mortem at 6 am on Monday.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed grief over the loss of lives in the boat capsizing incident in Malappuram on Sunday and ordered effective coordination of rescue operations. CM Pinarayi Vijayan said, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in the Tanur boat accident in Malappuram. District administration has been directed to carry out rescue operations effectively, which is being monitored by cabinet ministers.” He tweeted his condolences to the families of the deceased.

President Draupadi Murmu also expressed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the boat capsizing incident in Malappuram, Kerala. President Murmu tweeted, “The tragic death of people in the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala is extremely shocking and sad. My heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the well-being of the survivors.”
