The Jallianwala Bagh massacre is one of the most poignant and sad events of India’s freedom struggle, as a large number of innocent people were killed in it. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on April 13, 1919 in Amritsar, Punjab. A British officer named General Dyer ordered the firing of non-violent demonstrators who had gathered against the Rowlatt Act. Around 400 persons including 41 children were killed and more than 1000 people were injured in this sudden attack.
A meeting was organized at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar on April 13, 1919 at four o’clock in the evening against the Rowlatt Act. About 5000 people including men and women and children gathered in this meeting. During this meeting, while some leaders were giving speeches, General Dyer arrived at the entrance of the Bagh with a detachment of about 90 soldiers. He ordered the troops to fire without any prior warning. The sudden firing caused a stampede in the field. The soldiers fired a total of 1650 rounds of bullets in about 10 minutes, killing about 400 civilians.
