Andrei Botykov, one of the scientists who developed Russia’s Covid-19 vaccine ‘Sputnik V’, was strangled to death with a belt at his residence here. Russian media reports of his assassination have since leaked out. Botykov, 47, who worked as a senior researcher at the Gamalia National Research Center for Ecology and Mathematics, was found dead in his apartment on Thursday. The police caught the young man who killed him. The committee investigating the case said in a statement on Telegram that his death would be investigated as a homicide.
Argument with young man
Botykov, 47, had a heated argument with a young man at his home, including a fight, after which the young man removed the belt he was wearing and strangled the scientist and fled.
Who was Botykov?
Russian President Vladimir Putin honored Botykov with the ‘Order of Merit for the Fatherland’ award in 2021 for his work on a Covid vaccine. Botykov was one of the 18 scientists who developed the ‘Sputnik V’ vaccine in 2020.
