According to the report, the decision to lay off has been taken at Google for several reasons

Retrenchment process is going on in the shadow of recession in the world and employees have been retrenched from many big companies including Facebook, Twitter, Amazon. Recently Google has also joined this race. Now once again the company has started retrenchment of employees. It is being said that Google has laid off 453 of its employees in India.

Notice to employees by mail

According to a BusinessLine report published on Business Today, the removal of these 453 Indian employees took place on Thursday night and was informed by mail. This mail has been sent by Sanjay Gupta, Country Head and Vice President of Google India. The mail also mentions the consent of Indian-origin Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet.

CEO Sundar Pichai took charge

According to the report, the layoff decision has been taken at Google for several reasons and Sundar Pichai has agreed to take full responsibility for all these decisions. In a note sent by Google CEO Sundar Pichai earlier in the year i.e. in January 2023, he claimed that Google’s laid-off employees outside the US will get support as per local rules. While Google has laid off 453 employees in India, it is not yet clear how many employees will be affected globally or if there will be more layoffs at the tech giant.

12000 layoffs announced

It is to be noted that only last month Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc announced that around 12,000 employees will be laid off. These layoffs account for about 6 percent of the company’s total headcount globally. It is not clear if the layoffs in India are also included in this figure or if the company has started a new round of layoffs in the country.

Amid the threat of a recession, layoffs are taking place among the world’s leading companies citing cost-cutting, and tech companies are at the forefront. Apart from Google, Amazon has decided to cut 18,000 employees in its work force, while Facebook has let go of the first 11,000 employees and is facing layoffs on thousands of employees. Other companies involved in the layoff race include Twitter, Alibaba, Walmart and many other names.
