Have you ever seen a groom being greeted with a cigarette? These days a video is going viral in which this strange ritual is being seen. The mother-in-law is seen lighting the cigarette of the son-in-law.


Wedding season is on and you must have seen bridal showers on every street corner. You must have heard the funny jokes to welcome the marriage soul, some talk about welcoming the soul with tobacco, some welcome the soul in their home with sweets. But have you ever heard or seen that the groom is welcomed with a cigarette. A video is going viral these days, in which a cigarette is being given to the groom to welcome the groom.

Vadodara-based food blogger Juhi Patel posts Awanwa videos on her Instagram. Recently, she shared a video related to a wedding ceremony in which the groom is welcomed with a cigarette. Different communities, castes and religions have many beliefs regarding marriage which may seem strange to others. Somewhere paan is served and somewhere special drink is served, but this is a completely different belief.


The bridegroom was welcomed with a cigarette

Sharing the video, Juhi wrote- “A new wedding ritual has been seen where the mother-in-law welcomes her son-in-law with sweets, beedis and paan.” Although this custom is old and earlier people were welcomed by drinking beedi, but now beedi has been replaced by cigarettes. In the video, the groom is seen sitting on a chair with his mother-in-law and father-in-law standing in front of him. The mother-in-law puts a cigarette in the son-in-law’s mouth and then the father-in-law lights the cigarette with a match.


The video went viral

The viral video has received millions of views and many people have given their feedback by commenting. In the comments, Juhi clarified that this is an old ritual which is followed in some villages of South Gujarat. This was done for the ceremony, people are commenting on this video and giving their responses.
