CAA Protest 2019: Sharjeel Imam and his accomplice Iqbal Tanha, accused in a case of inflammatory speech during the CAA agitation in Delhi’s Jamia, have been acquitted by Delhi’s Saket Court.


Delhi’s Saket Court has acquitted Sharjeel Imam, accused of making inflammatory speeches and inciting riots during the CAA Protest in Delhi’s Jamia.In December 2019, violence had erupted after clashes at Jamia’s Shaheen Bagh between people protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the police. In which the police arrested Sharjeel Imam during their investigation.

In which sections did the police register the case?

Delhi Police had registered a case against Sharjeel under various sections for inciting riots, giving inflammatory speeches and many other related matters. A case was registered against Sharjeel and his associates under IPC sections 143, 147, 148, 149, 186, 353, 332, 333, 308, 427, 435, 323, 341, 120B and 34.


‘Sharjeel Imam is in jail’

Sharjeel Imam is in jail since 2020 in a case of riots in North East Delhi. He has more than one case going on. Imam and Iqbal Tanha have been kept in the custody of the Special Cell. The police allege that there was a deep conspiracy of these Imams and their companions behind the 2020 riots in North East Delhi.

What is the whole controversy about Sharjeel?


Protesters in Jamia’s Shaheen Bagh were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill. In this protest going on for several days, Sharjeel is alleged to have talked about breaking Assam and Northeast India through chicken neck at Aligarh Muslim University on 13 December 2019, and at Shaheen Bagh on 16 December 2019.
