Even though the government has set a rule regarding the number of SIM cards per person, even today people are bypassing the rules and using multiple SIMs on a single Aadhaar card. The deadline given by the Department of Telecom (DoT) last year for SIM-card verification has expired. In such a situation any person who has 9 or more SIMs active in one name. Department of Telecom is going to take action to cancel them. It is being said that on the New Year i.e. 1st January, SIM cards operating illegally in the country will be cancelled.

DoT has issued several warnings

In fact the Department of Telecom has many times warned people with 9 or more SIMs but still people are using 20-20 SIMs in the same name. Now the government has planned to cancel all SIM cards above 9 on a single Aadhaar by taking strict measures. According to media reports, neither outgoing calls nor incoming calls will be received from these SIM cards after cancellation.


What is the rule?

According to the Department of Telecom, any Indian citizen can have a maximum of 9 SIM-cards in his name. While there is a provision to have 6 SIMs for Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast. According to departmental information, having more than 9 SIMs on one ID will be considered illegal. This kind of step has been taken to prevent incidents of online fraud, nuisance calls. That is why the Department of Telecom is planning to cancel the SIM cards of people with illegal SIMs. Even before this, illegal SIM cards were banned in the month of January.


SIM cards of users running more than 9 SIMs have been asked to stop outgoing calls within 30 days and incoming calls within 45 days. The Department of Telecom is planning to completely deactivate SIM in 2 months or 60 days. However, even before this, the department has appealed many times for automatic shutdown of SIM cards. According to DoT if a complaint is received against a mobile number from a law enforcement agency or a bank or any other financial institution. So outgoing calls of such SIMs were ordered to be stopped within 5 days and incoming calls within 10 days.
