BCCI in action after T-20 debacle: Houses entire selection committee including Chetan Sharma, seeks applications for up to 28 new selectors

After the T20 World Cup 2022 loss, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken drastic measures. The entire team including BCCI Selection Committee Chairman Chetan Sharma has been gathered at home. Not only this, BCCI has also released a new application form for the vacant post. Team India suffered a 10-wicket defeat at the hands of England in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. Since then, questions were being raised on the team selection. Now the board has taken the first big step.

Didn’t even give information to the selection committee

According to an ESPN Cricinfo report, the selection committee was not informed when the BCCI took the decision on Friday. At that time, the Chief Selector and his fellow selectors were watching the Vijay Hazare Trophy matches being played in different cities of the country. The board did not give any reason for the sacking of the selection committee, but it is believed that Team India’s poor performance in two consecutive T20 World Cups could be the reason.

Applications invited for new selection committee

The selection committee had four members and its head i.e. chief selector Chetan Sharma. During Chetan’s tenure, Team India’s performance was very poor. In the 2021 T20 World Cup, Team India could not even reach the knock out stage. Apart from this, he had to face defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the final of the World Test Championship.

Apart from Chetan, the selection committee included Harvinder Singh, Sunil Joshi and Devashish Mohanty. Some of these became selectors in 2020 and some in 2021. Normally the tenure of the Senior Selection Committee is four years. It is being said that the decision to dismiss the selection committee was taken at the board’s AGM on Friday.

The BCCI is planning to replace the T20 squad that returns to the country without a World Cup title. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who won the 2007 title, also has a role in the board’s plans. To make the T20 team aggressive, the board may re-induct Dhoni into the team. The board has sent Dhoni with the team as a mentor in the T20 World Cup 2021. This claim has been made in a report by The Telegraph. According to the report, BCCI wants to build a team that plays fearless cricket like England. In this he is thinking of taking help of Dhoni’s expert skills and will take a decision soon.

The T20 and ODI squads may be different

The BCCI is considering forming separate limited-overs and Test teams on the lines of England. Not only this, different coaching staff can also be appointed for this team. A decision on a different coach may be taken this month.

Board eyes 2023 ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup

In 2023 ODI World Cup will be played only in India. After this, the T20 World Cup is to be held in America and West Indies in 2024. In such situation there is about 1 year left for ODI and 2 years for T20 World Cup. The team management wants a new team to be prepared for both these World Cups. Preparations are already being made for this.
