Why is Diwali celebrated?
On the Poonam day of the month of Kartak, Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripurasura. In joy of the slaying of this terrible demon, the gods lit many lamps in Kashi. This is the reason why Diwali is celebrated in Kashi even today on the day of Poonam in the month of Kartak every year. This Diwali was celebrated by Gods hence it is called Dev Diwali.
