Why is APJ Abdul Kalam's birth anniversary celebrated as World Students' Day?

World Students’ Day is also celebrated on 15 October every year on the birth anniversary of former President of India and Bharat Ratna APJ Abdul Kalam. World Students Day is celebrated in many countries of the world in honor of APJ Abdul Kalam. APJ Abdul Kalam, popularly known as Missile Man, was born on October 15, 1931. The purpose of celebrating World Students Day is to acknowledge and appreciate APJ Abdul Kalam’s work for education and students.


In the year 2010, the United Nations declared October 15 as World Student Day. The United Nations sets a theme for the celebration of this day every year. The theme of World Student Day 2021 is “Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace”. It aims to affirm the role of education as a fundamental right of every person worldwide.

Some special facts about APJ Abdul Kalam

Kalam was born on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. APJ Abdul Kalam studied science and physics in his early years. APJ Abdul Kalam dedicated his life to better teaching and inspiring students through his practical knowledge.


APJ Abdul Kalam is also known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ for developing the country’s most important Indian missiles and the country’s civil space programmes. APJ Abdul Kalam also served in several distinguished posts as administrator of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

India’s great aerospace scientist APJ Abdul Kalam became the 11th President of the country in 2002. APJ Abdul Kalam was the President of India from 2002 to 2007. After which his entire life was dedicated to education. APJ Abdul Kalam worked as a guest professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Indore.

APJ Abdul Kalam was awarded Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan for his work as Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.


APJ Abdul Kalam breathed his last on July 27, 2015 while delivering a lecture at IIM-Shillong. APJ Abdul Kalam fainted on stage while delivering a lecture and died of cardiac arrest. Even years after his death, his contributions are remembered as some of the best scientific and technological developments in the country.
