The Supreme Court of India gave a historic verdict, a woman’s right to abortion, whether married or not

Right granted by law

The Supreme Court of India has today given a historic verdict in which women across the country have been given the right to abortion. The Supreme Court said that up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, a woman, whether married or single, has full legal right to undergo a medical abortion.

No distinction between women

The Supreme Court said that unmarried women in India have the right to abortion under the MTP Act. Abortion laws make no distinction between married and unmarried women. Apart from this, the court said that marital rape is also included among the reasons for abortion.

What will be the effect on women now?

This ruling simply means that now unmarried women can decide to have an abortion up to 24 weeks after conception. Earlier this right was only for married women.
