The word literacy is derived from sakshar, which means one who is able to read and write. The day was started with the aim of promoting education in every section of the society in all the countries of the world.

History of Literacy Day

For the first time, UNESCO decided to celebrate International Literacy Day on 7 November 1965. A day was fixed for this. After which September 8 started to be celebrated as World Literacy Day. After the decision of UNESCO, the celebration of this day started in the next year i.e. 1966.


Why is Literacy Day celebrated?

It is very important for the nation and human development to know about their rights to every section of the society and on this day knowledge is given about this. This day is celebrated only to punish people. In which all the countries of the world celebrate this day to increase adult education and literacy rate.
