There is no recipe to be great. Does not make great. Greatness is inbuilt. Yes, there are some triggers inside a man… that when suppressed, become magnified and great. Major Dhyan Chand was one such great personality. The only talent to give India three gold medals each in Olympics. Although the gold went to the team, he did not get it individually, but his individual game was so amazing that the history he wrote in the Olympics in those years from 1928 to 1936 would not have been possible without him. The move by the Government of India to name the Rajiv Gandhi Khelratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand is welcome. Sports complexes, sports awards, sports-related schemes or scholarships should be attached to the names of the great athletes of the country before all these, so that more promotion and awareness of sports is increased.

His birth on 29th August 1905, which is now celebrated as National Sports Day. Born in Allahabad, this magician’s original name was Dhyan Singh. Next we will talk about how Dhyan Chand happened. His father was also a hockey player and played hockey for the Army. Dhyan Singh never played hockey. He also had little interest in other sports. Exceptional wrestling. His education was disturbed as his father, who liked to wrestle, was frequently transferred. He graduated from Victoria College, Gwalior. Joined the British Army as a soldier at the age of 17.

Under his guidance, Dhyan Chand became a great hockey player. Seeing his sports talent, he was made a Lance Nayak in 1927. His brother Rup Singh also played hockey with him at the international level. In 1928, for the first time, the Indian hockey team participated in the Amsterdam Olympics. In it, Team India won all the matches and Dhyan Chand got tremendous success. Dhyan Chand scored two goals in the final against Holland in which Team India won 3-0.

He scored 400 goals in his international career from 1926 to 1948. Sir Don Bradman was three years younger than him and was also a fan of Dhyan Chand. In 1935, Team India toured Australia and New Zealand. Don Bradman also came as one match was played in Adelaide. Dhyan Chand scores goals the way cricketers score runs in cricket, he said after watching his game. When he came to know that Dhyan Chand has scored 21 goals in 48 matches, he immediately expressed surprise, was this goal scored by a hockey player or a batsman!

In the final match of the Los Angeles Olympics, the team of India and the United States clashed. The Indian team defeated the American team 24-01. The next day a newspaper published, India’s hockey team is a storm from the east. In 1936, it became a sight to behold at the Berlin Olympics. In the warm up match, the Indian team lost 1-4 against the German team. Due to this, Dhyan Chand was very upset. A player named Mirza Masood was out of form. Ali Dara was specially called up from India to replace him. Ali Dara became a famous hockey player of Pakistan after independence.

The final match was played between India and Germany on 19th August. Hitler, his Propaganda Minister Charles Goebbels and several other Nazi officials came to watch the match. Nazi Germany fielded an Aryan hockey team, much to Hitler’s dismay. By the time half the match was over, India had scored only one goal. In the second half, Dhyan Chand and his brother Rup Singh took off their shoes and started playing with passion in their bare feet. Team India won 8-1.

There has been a lot of mis-reporting of this incident. Some have made such claims that Team India scored 15 goals and 14 of them were scored by Dhyan Chand. Many have written that six goals out of eight. Authentic information is that three of the eight goals were scored by Dhyan Chand and he scored a total of 33 goals in all the matches at the Berlin Olympics.

Hitler left the field before the team lost. Later came back to the presentation ceremony. He invited Dhyan Chand for dinner. Dhyan Chand is gone. Hitler was impressed by his playing. He asked, what else do you do besides hockey?
