Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has been appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India. The central government has issued a notification.
The government issued a notification on Wednesday and appointed Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as the 49th Chief Justice of India. Last week, Indian Chief Justice NV Ramana recommended the name of Justice Lalit as Chief Justice which the government accepted and has been officially announced in this regard.
The current Chief Justice NV Ramana will retire on August 26. Justice YU Lalit, the senior most judge in the Supreme Court, was appointed to the Supreme Court directly from the Bar.
withdrew from hearing the Ayodhya case
On January 10, 2019, Justice YU Lalit recused himself from the five-judge bench hearing the Ayodhya case. He argued that about 20 years ago, he had been the lawyer of former UP CM Kalyan Singh in a criminal case related to the Ayodhya dispute.
