Cleaning dispute escalates in Bopal: AMC refuses to accept demand, cleaners try to commit suicide by drinking phenyl, three shifted to Sola Civil

After the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s instructions on cleaning issues in Bopal and Ghuma areas of Ahmedabad, a committee of three Deputy Municipal Commissioners appointed as many as 53 cleaners as daily employees in the corporation as per the records provided by the municipality at that time. Cleaning operation started today in Bopal area. A protest was held today by some scavengers. As the demand of the scavengers was not met by the corporation, some scavengers tried to commit suicide by drinking phenyl on the road. Three cleaners have been shifted to Sola Civil Hospital for treatment after drinking phenyl.
Protested over the demand to make it permanent
Standing Committee Chairman Hitesh Barot said that the personnel who have been appointed for cleaning in Bopal area. As some of those employees appeared, cleaning has started from this morning with police presence. However, some sanitation workers are obstructing the work being done and trying to suppress the system. Bopal Police Station PI P.R. Jadeja said that some of the employees have been found to have consumed phenyl and have now been shifted to Sola Civil Hospital. According to the information, a list of 53 employees was given to the corporation when the municipality merged with the corporation for cleaning in Bopal and Ghuman areas. These 53 employees were taken on as daily employees on September 2 following the dispute. The cleaners protested today over non-hiring of some employees.
