The Union Health Ministry has notified to publish a new picture on the packs of tobacco products from December 1, 2022.
The central government has taken a major step to create awareness against tobacco products which are a major cause of deadly diseases like cancer. As per the details, there will now be a new warning for tobacco products manufactured, imported or packaged in the country on or after December 1, 2022. A new warning will be written on the packs of tobacco products that ‘tobacco causes painful death’. The Union Health Ministry has notified to publish a new picture on the packs of tobacco products from December 1, 2022. This rule will be valid for one year.
The notification by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Union Government also said that for the next year, a picture with a health warning will be displayed on tobacco products manufactured or imported or packaged on or after December 1, 2023. It will be written as a warning, ‘Tobacco users die young.’
The ministry has amended the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labeling) Rules, 2008 on July 21. Accordingly this notification regarding new health warnings has been issued. It said that the amended rules under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Third Amendment Rules, 2022 will come into effect from December 1, 2022. Violation of the rules will be a punishable offence
Violation of these guidelines will be a punishable offence, the government said. It provides for imprisonment or fine under Section 20 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Regulation of Advertising and Trade and Commerce, Manufacture, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003.
