Neeraj Chopra’s Family and Education

Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj was born on 24 December 1997 to a farmer in Khandara, a small village in Haryana’s Panipat district. Neeraj did his primary education from Panipat. After completing his primary education, Neeraj Chopra took admission in BBA College, Chandigarh and graduated from there.




Neeraj was fat in childhood

Neeraj was a bit fat as a child. Due to this, other children of the village used to make fun of him. His family also resented his obesity, so his uncle started taking him running at the stadium from the age of 13. But even after this his mind was not racing. On his way to the stadium, he saw other athletes throwing javelins there and then he too got into it. He started throwing javelin from there and has reached the Olympic champion.

in the Army in 2016

Along with his studies, he also continued practicing javelin. During this time he won many medals at the national level. Neerj won the gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World Under-20 Championships in Poland with a throw of 86.48 metres. The army then appointed him Naib Subedar as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Rajputana Regiment. Athletes are rarely commissioned as officers in the army, but Neeraj was made a direct officer because of his prowess.

Neeraj, who was happy to get a job in the army, said in an interview at that time that till date no one in my family has got a government job, I am the first member of my entire family who is going to do a government job. It is a matter of great happiness for our family. Through this I can continue my training as well as support my family financially.

    Neerj won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia with a throw of 88.06 meters. Neeraj became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Asian Games. India has so far won only two medals in javelin in the history of Asian Games. Gurtej Singh won the bronze medal in 1982 before Neeraj.

    In 2018, Neeraj was sidelined with a shoulder injury after a stellar performance at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. This kept him away from the game for a long time, after which several events were canceled due to Corona, which affected his game greatly, but he made a strong comeback at the Indian Grand Prix in Patiala in March. This year, Neeraj broke his own record and created a new national record with a throw of 88.07 meters.
