President Election 2022 Voting Latest News: Voting for President Election 2022 will start today from 10 am and will continue till 5 pm. NDA candidate Draupadi Murmoo is being challenged by opposition joint candidate Yashwant Sinha. Before voting, also know the process of voting in the presidential election. Why EVMs are not used in presidential election and also why green ballot papers are given to MPs and pink ballot papers to MLAs for voting. What is the reason behind it?
This is how voting happens
The President is elected by the Electoral College. The Electoral College includes the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament i.e. the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and the elected members of all the Legislative Assemblies. All the MPs and MLAs are called ‘Electoral College’ and each of them is called ‘Elector’. The value of each MP’s vote in the presidential election is the same, regardless of whether his parliamentary constituency is small or large. That is, whether the MP of a big state like UP has a vote value or a MP of a small state like Sikkim or Goa or any other state, their vote value is the same. However, the value of MLA votes is not the same. The value of votes of MLAs in presidential elections is determined on the basis of population. UP, the country’s largest state in terms of population, has the highest vote value of 208, while Sikkim has a vote value of 7. After the voting, the results of the presidential election will be announced on July 21.
EVMs are not used in presidential elections
EVMs are not used in Presidential, Vice President, Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections. In fact, EVMs are based on a technology in which they work to tally votes in direct elections like Lok Sabha and Assembly. The voter presses a button against the name of the candidate of his choice and whoever gets the highest number of votes is declared the winner.
Why MPs-legislators are given different color ballot papers?
As per the direction of the Election Commission, different colored ballot papers are given to the MPs and MLAs during the voting under the Presidential Election. MPs get green ballot papers and MLAs get pink ballot papers. This is because it will be easier for the election officials to count the votes during the counting.
To state here that in order to maintain the confidentiality of voting, the Election Commission has made available a special type of pen with ring ink to the Election Officer and voters for marking their ballot papers in Presidential elections.
