Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi arrested, jailed for two years for human trafficking

A case of human trafficking was pending in the Patiala Sessions Court

Earlier, the lower court had sentenced Daler Mehndi to two years in jail after he challenged the verdict in the sessions court.

Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi has been arrested by the police after the Patiala Sessions Court sentenced him to two years in a human trafficking case. Daler Mehndi was accused of smuggling people abroad by pigeon-holing. The lower court had earlier awarded a two-year sentence, but Daler Mehndi got bail from the sessions court.

A human trafficking case was filed against Bollywood and Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi in 2003. The singer is accused of more than 30 counts of human trafficking. He used to take people from India to foreign countries through his show and then those people used to stay there. In 2018, the Magistrate Court sentenced him to 2 years imprisonment in this matter.

The verdict was challenged by Daler Mehndi in the Sessions Court. The Sessions Court granted bail as the sentence was less than three years in view of the rules. The case was pending in the Sessions Court for the last four years. The court finally ruled and sentenced Daler Mehndi to two years in prison for human trafficking. After the punishment, the police arrested him. The Punjabi singer will be sent to Central Jail in Patiala. Daler Mehndi will serve his two-year sentence there. Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu is also serving his jail term in the same prison.

Singer Daler Mehndi’s brother Shamsher Singh is also an accused in the allegation of pigeon hunting. The first case was filed in 2003. A man named Bakhtish Singh filed a case against both the brothers.
