These include Railways, Defense (Civil), Home Affairs, Posts and Revenue. The share of Railways is 40.55 percent in the total prescribed strength of 31.33 lakh posts (excluding Union Territories). Government sources said that following Modi’s instructions, various departments and ministries were asked to prepare the details of vacancies and after a comprehensive review, a decision was taken to recruit 10 lakh people.

During various assembly elections, opposition parties have tried to corner the BJP on the issue of unemployment. Railways said that from 2014-15 to 2021-22, it recruited a total of 3,49,422 people and the average was 43,678 per annum, while in 2022-23 it would recruit 1,48,463 people
