Mother's deal with daughter's womb: Woman raped minor several times with friend, sold eggs 8 times in 4 years
In Tamil Nadu, a mother raped her minor daughter and then sold her eggs. According to the report of Indian Express, the case belongs to Salem district. Investigations have revealed that the minor girl was first raped by her mother’s male friend and then her eggs were sold in hospitals. The mother of the rape victim and her male friend have been arrested.
The investigating officer said that the rape of the girl and the sale of her eggs had been going on since 2017. The girl was a minor at the time. Her womb has been traded more than 8 times in the last 4 years. After the case came to light, the health officials of the state have talked to the girl and started her council.
Eggs were sold at the hospital for 20 thousand rupees
The victim said that every time she got pregnant, she used to get Rs 20,000 from the hospital for selling eggs. Out of this, a woman used to take 5 thousand rupees as commission and the rest of the money was kept by mother and her friend. This was being done twice a year.
Action taken on the victim’s complaint
The victim’s parents separated 10 years ago, after which she lived with her mother at her male friend’s house. The girl, who had been suffering from brutality for many years, ran away from her home in May and went to her friend. The girl narrated the incident to her friend, after which her friend and some relatives got together and lodged a complaint with the police. Police have arrested the girl’s mother and her male friend.
The state government formed a committee to investigate
The state health secretary told the media that a committee has been formed to probe the case. So far, cases have been registered under sections 420, 464, 41, 506 (ii) of IPC, including Poxo Act, Aadhaar abuse. In this case the growing case of infertility will also be investigated from the angle. Here, the police say that some doctors and brokers have been identified in this case. Action will be taken against them also.
Why a woman’s egg business?
Women can donate eggs by visiting Fertilization Centers. This process is called egg donation. In this, doctors remove eggs from a woman’s ovary and fertilize her in the lab with sperm, after which the fetus is born. This process is called in vitro fertilization i.e. IVF.
This fetal receiver is implanted in the woman’s womb. In most cases this happens when a woman is failing to become a mother because of her eggs. According to experts, a woman can be mentally affected after donating eggs.
Who could be an egg donor?
According to the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) i.e. ART Bill passed in December 2021, a woman between the ages of 21 and 50 who has a child of at least 3 years can donate the same egg. Any woman can donate an egg only once. The gazette notification was also made on December 25, 2021 after the law was made.
Trafficking in human embryos is considered a crime under this law. The first offense carries a fine of Rs 5 to 10 lakh. This is followed by imprisonment for eight to 12 years and a fine of Rs 10 to 20 lakh. In addition it is mandatory for both parties (donor and receiver) to have a written contract.
