Manufacturing in India: Apple's latest Apple model of iPhone 13 to be made in India, production begins
Apple has started production of iPhone 13 in India. The iPhone is being manufactured at the plant of Foxconn, the world’s largest contract manufacturer, at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. A spokesperson for Apple India told ET in an exclusive email statement, “We are excited to build the iPhone 13 with a beautifully designed, advanced camera system with good photos and videos and a cool A15 bionic chip.”
The phone will be made by Foxconn and Wistron
With the iPhone 13, the company now builds all of its top-selling models locally through its two contract manufacturing partners, Foxconn and Wistron. Its third partner, Pegatron, is also expected to start production this month, starting with the iPhone 12.
Foxconn makes the iPhone for Apple. Production of the iPhone 13 at the Chennai plant was scheduled to begin in January, but was halted after Apple halted production in December following protests by women workers about food poisoning.
Not becoming a pro model right now
Foxconn is the world’s largest electronics contractor and also a major supplier to Apple. Over the years, the company has expanded into areas such as electric vehicles (EVs) and semiconductors.
Apple phones are being made in India since 2017
Apple started manufacturing iPhone in India with iPhone SE in 2017 and currently produces iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and now iPhone locally. None of its pro models have been made in India at present. The Cupertino-based launch has thus reduced the deadline between September 24, 2021- and domestic production of the latest iPhone model from eight months to six to seven months.
Apple’s journey in India started two decades ago
The iPhone 13 comes with a modern 5G experience, A15 bionic chip, longer battery and better design. Apple’s journey in India started about 20 years ago. Apple launched its online store in September 2020 and the company has expressed its commitment to expand the business in the country.
